The Mozy Day

Updated: Dec 16, 2022

Part 1

Today was a glorious November day. It was a Saturday, and I was going to end my piano lesson when I asked Lavania Aunty, my piano teacher, if I could feed her Betta fish Rick because it was so cute. She gave me some of the fish food, and I fed it. Next, she placed her hands inside the tank and showed me how she had trained the fish to sit in her palm. After that, she helped me do the same. And oh, I was stunned! Rick felt unbelievable in my palm, so soft!

I had always secretly wanted this fish, and now I was sure about it.

When we were in the car, I told Mum right away that I wanted a Betta fish. She didn’t even hesitate for a moment before she said yes. We decided on a name right away- Mozart Beethoven, Mozy. I wanted it to have the name of a piano composer because it was my piano lessons that led me to this fish. Later that afternoon, Mum and I went to an aquarium where we could buy my Mozy. We planned it all there and told a gentleman named Arun that we wanted some plants, driftwood, river sand, and rocks in Mozy’s tank. He agreed and told us Mozy would be delivered on Tuesday. We came back home and told Nana all about it. He joked that he couldn’t wait to eat the fish. I punched him in the back.

Part 2

It was Tuesday, and I was finishing my dreadful dry fruit shake. “When will Mozy come?” I asked Mum, excitedly. Mum just laughed and told me to be patient and wait till 4:00 in the afternoon.

Finally, it was 4:02 pm, and Arun and his assistant arrived at our house with about 15 Betta fish from which I could choose. I leapt up readily and selected four from the group- a red one and three blues. I rejected two more right away, leaving one red and one blue. We kept them in the tank to see how they looked, and I thought for a while. Half of my mind said, ‘Choose the red’, and the other half said, ‘Choose the blue.’ But finally, I just could not resist the red. Arun set up our aquarium environment and put the fish (now Mozy) in. Arun advised me not to put my hand in too frequently as the fish would get stressed. He said that each would live for approximately a year.

After Arun and his assistant left, Mum and I couldn’t take our eyes off Mozy, and we kept playing songs for him to entertain him and make him feel at home. I then remembered Nana saying he would eat Mozy, and Mum and I laughed over it for quite a time. Later, when Nana came home, he repeated the joke, and I punched him twice this time. That’s how The Mozy Day ended.
