- A Twist in the Tale
I’m sure you all know the story of a beautiful girl with skin as white as snow, lips as red as blood, and hair as black as ebony- The Story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. When her mother dies, her vain and proud stepmother with a magic mirror takes her mother’s place. She notices that Snow white is getting more and more beautiful by the day. Jealousy squeezes her heart. But when Snow White is sent to the forest to be killed, she escapes and finds the home of Seven Dwarfs, who take her in with open arms. But this is where the fairy tale and the truth part ways. I know what really happened and I am going to tell you all about it….
One day, when the dwarfs were out at work, Snow White went out to gather fruits and vegetables from the forest. It was a lovely, lush green forest. The birds chirping, monkeys scrambling about and squirrels darting in and out of trees made her feel at ease. The canopy of leaves was so welcoming, and she sighed in bliss. As she started to collect the ingredients for the day’s cooking, a young woman came trudging up this particular path. Snow White noticed how hungry she looked and offered her an apple.
“Oh thank you so much! How kind of you it is!” She took it gratefully. Snow White noticed that she had a very peculiar accent, a French one.The young woman introduced herself as Amelia. “I’ve just come a long way from Hergrasiland and have collected rare herbs on the way. I’m a herbalist.” She was happy to see Snow White’s interest in all the medicinal plants growing around. Amelia offered to let her see her little home laboratory. “It is a very humble one, not a big..er..what is the word..ah, modern one.”
Soon they reached the laboratory, a thatched hut which had a few leaks here and there.
Amelia spoke excitedly about all her various herbal potions.Snow White was very interested in this topic. “I would be happy to train you to be a herbalist too !” said Amelia. After that they met up everyday and Snow White learnt more and more. In a few weeks, she herself learnt how to blend herbs into healing potions. When she was somewhat an expert, Amelia gifted her a satchel of vials and herbs, basically a herb kit. Snow White was delighted. Soon they became laboratory partners. On one such day, she suddenly said,” There is an..hmm..aura of danger around you, I repeat to you there is an..aura of ..er..danger around you” and with these words she gave her an emergency vial, which Snow White added to her collection, surprised.
Working with herbs and taking care of the dwarfs and their tiny home, Snow White felt at peace and thought of Amelia’s warning as an over reaction. One day, when she was sitting outside plucking roses, she heard a galloping of hooves. Snow white looked up to see the most handsome prince she had ever met. ‘Oh my goodness me,’ she thought. As he drew nearer, Snow White’s heart raced faster and faster. He halted his horse and jumped off. He stared, dumbstruck at the beautiful girl in front of him. They both instantly fell in love with each other. He said, “I’m Prince Richard, and I have lost my way. I am the prince of the neighbouring kingdom.” Snow White whispered, awestruck, “You are welcome in my humble home. I’m Snow White and I live with seven dwarfs.” They both sat in the garden and spoke for hours, and Snow White grew to trust him. When the dwarfs returned, they were wary of him at first, but when they saw Snow White’s love for him, they warmed to him.
One day, an old woman came along, selling apples. She offered a rosy one to Snow White. ‘There must be something wrong,’ she thought. ‘Those shiny eyes seem familiar..’
So, clever Snow White, took the apple, and quietly swapped it for one in her own basket and popped it into her mouth, and pretended to fall down dead. The old woman threw off her disguise revealing that she was Snow White’s stepmother. She ran away, cackling, “Hahahaha! Now that horrible girl is out of my way!”. The moment she was out of sight, Snow White leapt up, just in time to see the prince bite into the poisoned apple, falling down in a dead faint. She was inconsolable. Snow White sat without eating at the prince’s feet, mourning him for days.. She suddenly remembered the emergency vial that Amelia had given her. Quick as a flash, she leapt to her feet and rushed over to her satchel. She rummaged around and finally found the glass bottle. With bated breath, she opened the stopper and poured a few drops into his mouth. He slowly opened his eyes and hugged Snow White.
They knew that as long as the wicked queen was alive they would never be safe. So they put together an army consisting of both soldiers from Richard’s kingdom army and magical-creatures commanded by Snow White. They marched off toward the palace. It was a surprise attack and after an uphill, exhausting battle, they finally tasted victory. They both cried with joy. After a week, the prince swept her on his horse and they rode away to his kingdom. They had seven butlers, the dwarfs and a main physician, Amelia. Thankfully, they lived happily for the rest of their lives.
You probably must be wondering how I know all of this;I didn’t introduce myself….my name is Amelia.
