My Thiruvizha Day !!

Dear Diary,

I suppose that Sunday, 21st April, was an unforgettable day for me. I had never had so much fun in my life. Wait- now let me be methodical about this…

Nana had promised to take me out to a church festival (Thiruvizha) and I was positively jumping for joy. Of course, there is an early part and a later part to a day. We were going to the church festival in the latter. I hopped in the car and waved goodbye to my mum and granny, and off we went. First, after an exhausting 1 hour and 45 minutes, we reached the petrol bunk, where Nana’s close friend, William Uncle was waiting for us. There was a small room at the back, where we all sat. Then Nana called up another friend, Rufus Uncle. Thoughts raced through my head…how would he be, who even WAS he…. But then there was no time for this sort of thing, because by then Rufus Uncle had arrived. All the adults explained in detail to me about when they were boys, they lived in the same street, how they played cricket and football, and so on. They (Rufus and William Uncle and Nana) threw their heads back and laughed after each funny moment and I totally got how they were best of friends. After all of this, Nana, William Uncle, Rufus Uncle, and I set off for the Thiruvizha.

It was evening, around 6:00, when we reached (the journey took about 10 minutes) and we walked down the street. First, we went to the church…………...uh oh. There was a humongous line of people that extended to the compound wall and bent a little. Quickly glancing around, they took me through a back door. Wait. Wasn’t there a sign that said “no entry” on the door? I was going to mention that, but my escorts and Nana winked at each other and grinned. Oh. They had done it on purpose, to come in faster.  We bought a garland from the stall outside and a candle. We prayed for about 30 seconds and placed the garland on the Lord Jesus. I hovered the candle next to another one, and it lit up. I placed it in the candleholder then it was time to go outside to explore the Thiruvizha!

Oh my, was the crowd gigantic! Everyone was shoving and pushing each other. ! First, we went on the left side.  They sold everything from watches to plastic toys and dishes, cooking toys, pipe horns and everything you could possibly imagine. Rufus Uncle said “Whatever you want to buy you can ask us” and we started off. There were mostly plastic toys in the beginning and nothing appealed to me so I didn’t want much. But then we came to the watch store :they sold watches of all kinds: leather, plastic…. I choose a lavender coloured watch with metal inside and rubber strap. It was the most beautiful watch I had ever seen. Oh boy was I extremely happy! Next we stopped at a stall with a kind of rolling machine which looked like the things you used to roll chapatis but there were different colours on it and whenever someone asked “ice cream please, ice cream!” the person who was attending to them would  just squeeze something which looked like multicoloured noodles out and put it into a paper plate as big as your fist.

Wait, that was ice cream? I think people called it Semia ice cream. We stopped at a small platform to eat it and it was delicious. Nana and I had a paper plate each, and I simply loved it. Next, we moved on to little stall with lights. There were these curious little pen like things…if you pressed a button on them, they would just shine microscopic type of laser patterned lights. And if you twisted a part of that little laser light, the patterns would just change. I tugged at Nana’s shirt and told him I wanted that, please. Then Rufus uncle said, “ Okay, which colour do you want?,” And I chose green because it looked really nice in the darkness. Of course it was 7:00 o'clock by then. Then, after that, we went to another plastic store. There was a type of toy with display when if you press 2 buttons the rings inside it would pop up inside the 3-d screen and you should make those rings fall onto a rod.  I want to buy that so I asked Nana again. He agreed and then we walked on. My dad said, “ Let's turn around home” but Rufus uncle and William uncle said, ”No, let's continue; there are only a few stalls more and then we can go on the right side”. We got to stall where everything was laid out on a blanket on the floor and there was a lighting up plastic sword that was extendable and you could fold it up.  It intrigued me so I brought it.  I was extremely happy after that. Next we went to a sort of shop where there was a green rubber yoyo and I liked it. Rufus uncle took it and then we saw that I was fine with the colour, but it wasn’t one I really liked, so we put it back, but the lady there said that we couldn't buy another one since we had already touched it. All of us looked incredulously at her. But she just held her hand out and smirked, smugly. We paid for it and then we saw another food stall. William uncle bought us some French fries, some mayonnaise and some sauce. Then we dipped it and ate it as we walked towards the amusement park. We took a look around and there were roller coasters that looked terrifying.  I was already happy with what all I had bought so we just moved on. Then it was time to go,  so we just said goodbye to each other and thanked William and Rufus Uncle.

Diary, I do think that Rufus and William uncle were most awfully generous , gracious, and friendly. I owe them the day that gave me heaps of pleasure and happiness.

Yawn!

Good night, Diary!
